“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” —Isaiah 26:3
Anxiety, for many of us, has become a persistent companion—often unwelcome but quietly present, especially in uncertain times. Sometimes it surges in moments of crisis, other times it hums beneath the surface, wearing down our strength. I know what it is to wake up with a heart already racing, or to lie down with thoughts that refuse to rest.
What brings comfort, then? Certainly not more news, more analysis, or more control. True peace, lasting peace, comes from knowing God—not merely knowing about Him, but setting our minds on who He truly is. The more we meditate on His character, the more our anxious thoughts lose their grip. God’s attributes are not abstract doctrines; they are personal, steadying truths for hearts prone to fear.
Here are five attributes of God that have helped calm my anxious soul.
God Is Sovereign – He is in control.
When life spins beyond our grasp, it’s easy to feel abandoned or exposed. But Scripture assures us that God is reigning—not only in heaven but over every detail of our lives. He is not surprised by our circumstances. His sovereignty brings assurance that nothing we face is random or wasted.
“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” —Psalm 115:3
“The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” —Psalm 103:19
“We know that for those who love God all things work together for good…” —Romans 8:28
God Is Good – He does what is best.
In our anxious moments, we often question not only what will happen but whether the outcome will be good. Yet God’s goodness is not dependent on our perspective—it is His very nature. Even when we don’t understand His ways, we can trust His heart.
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” —Psalm 34:8
“You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.” —Psalm 119:68
“The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.” —Psalm 145:9
God Is Wise – He knows what is best.
Anxiety often stems from not knowing what to do or fearing we’ll make the wrong decision. But the burden to figure everything out was never ours to carry alone. God’s wisdom is deeper than we can imagine, and His plans are never misguided or uncertain.
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments…” —Romans 11:33
“To the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ!” —Romans 16:27
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously…” —James 1:5
God Is Faithful – He keeps His promises.
An anxious heart often wavers between hope and doubt. But God never does. His promises are not fleeting, and His character does not change with the seasons of our lives. What He has said, He will do. What He has begun, He will complete.
“God is not man, that he should lie… Has he said, and will he not do it?” —Numbers 23:19
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases… great is your faithfulness.” —Lamentations 3:22–23
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope… for he who promised is faithful.” —Hebrews 10:23
God Is Near – He loves and cares for you.
Perhaps the most comforting truth for a weary soul is this: God is near. He is not distant or indifferent to our struggles. He hears, He sees, and He invites us to bring our burdens to Him. His presence is not a theory—it is a promise.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” —Psalm 34:18
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God…” —Isaiah 41:10
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” —1 Peter 5:7
“Do not be anxious… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 4:6–7
When anxiety looms large, the solution is not to suppress it or pretend it’s not there. Instead, we are invited to lift our eyes to the One who is greater than our fear. The more we dwell on who He is, the less power our worries hold.
So let us return, again and again, to the truths that never change—to the character of the God who never leaves. There is peace, even in the storm, when our minds are stayed on Him.
Charles , This is really good . I just transcribed a sermon by CH Spurgeon entitled “7 ways we carry Gods Presence”. The first and most foundational evidence is a “peace that floods our soul. “. As you point out , God is defined by his attributes and the evidence is peace. Peace is the evidence and reality of Gods presence, how we glorify God. The evidence that we are his image bearer. Peace is what makes Christian’s noticeable in a turbulent and crazy world. Please make sure Amanda is on your mailing list. Keep up the good work!
Good words from the Word. I have been in Psalm 111 the past two months meditating on His work that is always perfect, timely and for our good and His glory. We are also preaching through Hebrews this year and seeing that Jesus Christ is always interceding on our behalf.
Anxious thoughts crowd in but if I/we look to Him comfort is not far off.
Thank you for taking us back to the Scriptures to remember God’s holy and wonderful character! Definitely encouraging!
